Scorpions come out on top in close game

Jake M
Jayden
Our first ever trip to the home of Writtle Minors today as the Scorpions were eager to get back out on the pitch and get back to winning ways.
The game started brightly for the Scorpions as they pinged the ball around with confidence and a good early chance fell to Conner who just couldn't connect with his shot. Writtle Minors quickly showed they were not just there to make up the numbers though and a quick break from them saw an effort fly just wide.
The game was end to end but the Scorpions kept up on the attack. A looping ball played in was parried by the Writtle keeper and Jake M was on hand to brilliantly anticipate the keepers fumble and tuck the ball away to make it 1-0.
Some more neat play between Jayden and Jake M was pleasing on the eye and the Scorpions were seeing a lot of the ball - a long range effort from Jake M being saved well by the keeper. The Scorpions were looking the more dominant threat and this time it was Poyraz who hit a cracking shot on the half-volley but the keeper again parried away.
Writtle continued to show they were a threat on the break as they got another shot away but the Scorpions looked a danger every time they went forward. Great work on the wing from Jake M saw him fizz the ball across the 6 yard box with Jayden just unable to get a touch, and a wonderful effort from Jake B from distance smashed against the top corner of the bar (shame those posts were so thick!) Cracking effort!!
Unfortunately it was some very poor defending from the Scorpions not clearing their lines that undid all of that hard work, a soft goal to concede so close to Half Time. Tor also pulled off a great save just as the whistle blew 1-1 at HT and game on!
The second half and it was all Scorpions. Jake M earning an early free kick with some tricky feet. He lined up the ball and hit a great effort which beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by some great defending. Another curling effort from Jake M from distance dropped agonisingly wide. So close!! Connor then put in a great cross and again Jayden just couldn't get on the end of it - how we were not leading was a mystery.
But just as good as the Scorpions were for the first 10 mins of the second half, Writtle were for the next 10 mins. Tor was being called upon to make a string of incredible saves to keep the match level. Caspar and George had to work incredibly hard at the back and Mason was working hard hunting down the ball up top - but the Scorpions held firm.
With a few minutes to go the match was on a knifes-edge. Jake B with some brilliant skill got away from his marker but his shot went just wide and we all wondered if there would be a winner. Just as the feeling was that the game was edging towards a draw, Jake M broke down the right and put in a beautiful pass to Jayden who slotted the ball hard and low past the keeper to earn the Scorpions a win. 1-2 FT.
A fantastic match to watch and played in a great spirit - a very well earned victory against a very good Writtle team. Well done boys.
Scorpion of the match - Tor
Not for the first week Tor was absolutely immense in goal. Decision making, bravery but above all his incredible ability to shot stop kept Writtle at bay today. We did concede too many chances and made life harder than it needed to be at times, but Tor was on hand to keep that ball out of the net and kept the Scorpions in the game until the very end. Fantastic again today mate, well done.
