Scorpions run riot against Dunmow Lions

15th Dec 2019

Scorpions 9 – 2 Dunmow United Lions
Jake (3)
Archie (2)
Mason (2)
Tor (2)

On a beautiful morning at Tabor we hosted the Dunmow United Lions in our last match of 2019. After a good win at Dunmow earlier in the season we knew we'd had chances and that if we played to our best we'd have a good chance to win.

With Poyraz and George missing today we changed things up at the back with Caspar taking on the responsibility of playing in defence. The game started well with the Scorpions attacking into the glaring sun with an early opportunity almost falling to Jake before the ball was well collected by their goalkeeper. With ball in hand their keeper hit a monster kick that took a bounce and found its way into our net to make it 0-1 and a really unfortunate start.

The Scorpions we not deterred and is wasn't long before we were in level terms. A lovely through ball from Caspar found Jake in space and he tucked away a beautiful side footed finish to make it 1-1. The Scorpions now had their tails up and a great ball in from Archie from the wide right position found Jake and another really smart finish made it 2-1 in the blink of an eye.

More chances fell to the Scorpions as they swarmed forward. Mason finding himself through on goal did everything right to make a scoring opportunity, but his powerful shot went just wide of the post. More chances falling to Jake and Archie couldn't be converted but the Scorpions were well on top.

A rare attack from the Lions resulted in a corner for the away side. The corner was fizzed in well and a defection off our player saw the ball trickle into the bottom corner to bring the match all square. 2-2

The Scorpions were showing a brilliant attitude today, no getting upset at conceding we just continued to play our football and it wasn't long before we were back in front - Jake with a trademark run through on goal rounding the keeper to score another really nice goal - 3-2 and a first half hat-trick for Jake.

The Scorpions were not finished, with Archie through he struck a lovely shot which was saved well but Mason took up a brilliant position and with work still to do slotted the ball beautifully in to the net 4-2

With the half coming to an end another Scorpions attack saw us score again, this time a neat finish from Archie to put us in a commanding lead going into the second half. 5-2

The boys were very pleased with themselves at half time but we told them to keep concentrating and to keep their energy levels high. The Lions were not a bad side at all and we needed to stay focused and to not let our lead slip.

The message seemed to hit home with the second half starting brightly with Lucas doing some lovely skills to earn his team a free kick. Caspar taking the resulting free kick found Jake in the box but his finish went just wide. It was then Mason who put a lovely pass into Jake but unfortunately put his shot wide again.

The Lions were really struggling to get any kind of foothold in the game and as the Scorpions continued to attack. Archie finding space in the area hit a lovely finish to make it 6-2 grabbing his second of the game. Tor, who didn't have a great deal to do today in terms of saves, then hit a huge goal kick. The ball flew through the air and sailed over their keeper to make it 7-2.

Another lovely move from the Scorpions saw Archie in space and his pass into Mason was converted with confidence to make it 8-2. The final goal of the game came from an ecstatic Tor as another massive goal kick found the net, with our goalie collecting his second goal of the match! 9-2 Full Time.

A quite brilliant performance today from the Scorpions. Caspar was absolutely immense at the back and didn't put a foot wrong. He played longer than anyone today and he did a brilliant job for his team. Lucas and Patrick both worked so hard with Lucas especially showing some lovely touches and skills. Archie and Mason were an absolute menace to the Lions defence and Jake was causing problem all match finding pockets of space and looking to always stretch their defence. Tor in goal walked off at full time with a huge grin as his two massive kicks both found the net to give him a very unlikely brace!

A great end to the year with a great training session yesterday flowing in the match today. Becky, myself and all the parents couldn't be more proud of you all – bring on 2020.

Have a wonderful Christmas and New year.

Scorpion of the match – Lucas

Caspar and Lucas were both great today but Lucas got stuck in all over the pitch, always looked for a pass and showed some really lovely touches and skill. He was moved into defence for the last five minutes to give Caspar a well earned rest and was always in position. He has found the last couple of weeks quite tough to get involved in matches but today he was brilliant - well done mate. 15th Dec 2019
