Tough away day but Scorpions grab a share of the spoils

Torquespeed Falcons 2 – 2 Scorpions
Jake (2)

We knew today would be a tough match against the Falcons but a gutsy performance got us a share of the spoils.

The first half was very evenly matched with both teams struggling to hold onto possession and get their passing flowing. The Scorpions started somewhat sluggishly and it took around 8 minutes to see the first chance of match, with Archie shooting from a tight angle and clipping the post.

A few minutes later and the Scorpions conceded their first goal in the league this season, a good break from the Falcons and a tidy finish giving Tor little chance. That goal seemed to spur the Scorpions into life but a shot from Lucas didn't have the power to trouble the keeper. The highlight of the half for the Scorpions was a great effort from Archie which cannoned off the bar.

Half time 1-0 to the Falcons.

Some words of encouragement at half time from the manager seemed to do the trick as the boys came out far more positive in the second half. The movement and passing was much better and gaps were starting to appear for the Scorpions to exploit. The equaliser wasn't far away with George passing into Jake and his neat finish made it 1-1.

Before long and the Scorpions were ahead with the goal of the game. Straight off the training ground a run down the left flank from George was squared into Jake between two defenders and his shot running onto the ball was finished superbly. Brilliant link up play from George and Jake and a fantastic goal.

The Falcons were still looking dangerous with the big number 10 and number 8 controlling things in the middle of the park. Poyraz really had his work cut out today, but as ever was very reliable and dealing with most of the threat coming his way. The Scorpions were however making life difficult at the back as a team unit by not clearing their lines quickly enough and inviting pressure. Lucas, Tor and Mason was putting themselves about well in the second half and Caspar in goal was looking assured. As the final whistle approached a late effort from Jake sailed agonisingly wide before a very sloppy goal was conceded to make the game 2-2 at full time.

Our toughest opponents of the season but after a slow start we found our passing and attacking threat. The second goal was especially pleasing for Becky and I and we want to see more link up play up front like we practise in training every week. We showed really great character by battling from a goal down to take the lead and looked the far better team in the second period – that being said we must start believing in ourselves more at the start of games!!

Well done everyone, see you next week.

Scorpion of the Week - George

George has shown huge improvement this season. His commitment and understanding in training and the way he is transferring what he learns in training into matches has been fantastic to see. He reads the game well and his positional understanding lead to 2 assists today. He kept breaking up play and drove the team forward on numerous occasions. Fantastic effort George, keep it up.
