Scorpions let 4 goal lead slip

Sunday 13th October 2019

Scorpions 4 - 5 Dunmow United Tigers
Archie (3)
Mason

We knew we were up against strong opposition today but the boys were determined and in bullish mood from the off.

The Scorpions started the match on fire with Jake and Archie testing the Dunmow keeper early on and forcing smart saves. A few minutes later and another effort from Jake forced another good save. It wasn't long before the deadlock was broken with the Scorpions taking a deserved lead with a neat finish from Archie and a Mason assist.

The second goal followed quickly with an excellent run down the right wing from Jake, he got to the by-line and squared the ball into the centre and Mason was on hand to convert high into the net. 2-0. The goals kept coming and two further goals for Archie completed a brilliant first half hat-trick and it was 4-0 to the Scorpions with only 10 minutes on the clock. Dunmow were still threatening and Lucas made some great last ditch tackles as did Poyraz, and some absolutely amazing saves from Tor kept the Dunmow strikers out. With just seconds to go Tor was finally beaten by a fantastic finish to make it 4-1 at half time.

The second half was in complete contrast to the first. The boys struggled to find rhythm and some sloppy play let the Dunmow Tigers back into the game. All of the things we trained on such as not passing and throwing into danger areas, clearing the ball and pressuring the opposition when on the ball were all missing in the second half. This allowed Dunmow time and space to take long shots, and with powerful strikers of the ball in their team, that was the difference. A disappointing end to the match to lose 5-4 after such a brilliant start.

A good lesson today that the game is not won at half time. We need to keep doing the things we are working on for the whole 40 minutes. We need to remember our shape and when we concede not to worry and to go again. A good effort today against a very good team, and we showed just how good we are in that first 20 minutes when they couldn't live with us. Let's use this is a lesson learned and move onto next week. Well done everyone.

Scorpion of the match - Jake

Had some good chances today but luck wasn't on his side in finding the net. Made some great runs and always has his head up looking for a player in a better position than him. His run and cross that assisted for the goal was brilliant and what we want to see more of. Well done.
