Dragons v Writtle Minors Blues
Harrison (2)
The Dragon's Den was the venue for what seems to be a break with Lockdown 2.0 looming. It was a typical dull, windy and damp auntumnal morning that greeted us in Wethersfield.
Reminiscent of the weather itself, is exactly how the Dragons started today. Caught napping and a goal behind within 2 minutes, the visitors catching us cold. Straight from the restart Writtle won a corner, the ball swung in evading Roo and cruelly striking Pearcey outstretched leg into the net for a 0-2 scoreline.
It was from that moment with barely 3 minutes on the clock the Dragons woke from their slumber. From the restart forcing a chance for Harrison from distance ,after neat work from Logan, inching past the post. Jenson and Pearcey were working doggedly up and down and started to take control of the game by winning the midfield battle, all of sudden it was all Dragons pressure. Needing a breakthrough for hope, Harrison turned in the box and was clipped by the defender resulting in a penalty kick. Harrison stepped up, struck it well but was saved by the keeper, the rebound fell back to Harrison luckily who made no mistake this time finding the bottom corner for 2-1. Changes made and Zack and Sam slotting straight in seemlessly to this flowing Dragons side.
Writtle countered before half time, Zack managed to get a solid block in but couldn't prevent the second attempt crossing in from the right but Sam stood tall meeting it with his head to clear the danger.
Half time...
Second half started with more Dragons resistance at the back with Angus proving to be a small man mountain defending with everything on the line. That desire was matched with defensive partner SB getting blocks and tackles in to maintain the close gap. Jenson spraying the ball wide for Pearcey to run onto was becoming a theme as the Dragons battled to get forward to try level the game.
It was the hosts that struck first in the second half unfortunately a neat interchange and some tired legs on our part breaching our defence, leaving Roo no chance. The Dragons heads refused to drop and kept pushing. The visitors pinched a corner against the run of play, and in an almost carbon copy of the first half, the ball swung in deflecting cruelly off of Angus squirming into the bottom corner for 1-4.
Still refusing to lay down, Angus drove forward with Logan, the ball pinballing around in the penalty area before Harrison fired home for a lifelime. The time was against us and despite winning 2 late corners, Jenson delivered and were cleared by the visitors on the break away fired in a fifth on the full time whistle for a defeat for the Dragons.
Not our day today but a much closer game than the scoreline suggests, 2 cruel own goals and a last kick cherry on top for Writtle. Each Dragon performed superbly today and I can't fault the football played again today boys - well done.
Dragon of the Week - Every Dragon
This shows today what a good team performance was put in by all the boys, votes from the parents were split all over the place such was the display today, myself and Ben felt only right to not pick an individual but recognise the groups performance! Well done boys!
Stay Safe, see you all sooner rather than later hopefully!
